Status and Roles

Everyone of us participate in many groups: family, club, studentship and organizations.

You might be mother at home, a student taking MBA in a school, and also a manager at work.

Status refers to the socially defined positions or roles that individuals occupy within a society or social group.

 These positions are typically associated with certain rights, responsibilities, and expectations. 

Status can be ascribed, meaning it's assigned to individuals based on characteristics such as age, gender, or ethnicity, which they have no control over.

 It can also be achieved, earned through individual efforts, talents, or accomplishments.

Statuses can vary in terms of their prestige, importance, and influence within a particular society. 

The combination of an individual's various statuses, known as their "status set," plays a significant role in shaping their social identity and interactions with others.

 Additionally, the concept of "status hierarchy" highlights the ranking or ordering of different statuses in terms of social power and respect within a given culture or community. 

Understanding status is essential in sociological analyses of social stratification, inequality, and group dynamics.

However, each status has some roles. A role consists some activities the one in status is expected to perform. Each carries a status as well.

The takeaway is that people choose products that reflect or communicate their roles in status they belong.

Is Liberalism under attack?

I believe the answer may be yes. It's yes because two powerful states in Asia: China and Russia have consolidated authoritarian regime, that the end points may not be visible soon.  These two forces are working tirelessly to globalize oligarchy and authoritarianism.
